Because of the museum\u2019s location and the nature of the works preserved there, this collection was not widely known prior to Perestroika and the 1987-88 exhibition.<\/span>. The provenance of the Larionov and Goncharova works in this public collection is well documented, and is similar to the one given for the body of works displayed in the 1987 exhibition. Like them, the series of brothel scenes met with a glowing reception. He reminds us that the subject of these scenes of \u201cdebauchery\u201d interested the artist as early as 1902 and were criticized by his instructors at the Stroganov School for their \u201cindecent,\u201d \u201cexcessively libertine\u201d content. The figures in the artist\u2019s brothel-scene pastels are recognizable in some of his other works, for example a painting in his estate, at present among the holdings of the Tretyakov Gallery<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000044030000000000000000_678\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000044030000000000000000_678-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000044030000000000000000_678-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Card Players, c. 1914, oil on canvas (see footnote 1 above).<\/span>. In Central Europe and thereafter in Russia the theme of brothel scenes was in vogue in the years 1908-1912 among artists and collectors owing to the circulation of erotic films that circulated freely until they were banned in 1912.
